In this painting, two brothers have taken the family sled out to the woods to fell a large pine tree just in time for the Christmas Holiday. They are driving a "converted" sleigh. When the snow fell, and the roads became frozen and impassable, many folks would simply swap out the wheels on their wagon or carriage for a set of sled runners.
